Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Guide
How California's IID program works under SB1046 — costs, requirements, and what to expect
What Is an Ignition Interlock Device?
An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a breathalyzer installed in your vehicle that prevents the engine from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. You must blow into the device before starting your car, and periodically while driving ("rolling retests").
Under California Senate Bill 1046 (SB1046), effective January 1, 2019, ALL DUI offenders statewide are required to install an IID. The major benefit: with IID, you can drive anywhere, anytime — not just to work and school.
IID Requirements by Offense
| Offense | IID Duration | Driving Privileges |
|---|---|---|
| 1st DUI | 6 months | Full unrestricted with IID |
| 2nd DUI | 1 year | Full unrestricted with IID |
| 3rd DUI | 2 years | Full unrestricted with IID |
| 4th+ DUI | 3 years | Full unrestricted with IID |
How Much Does an IID Cost?
| Cost Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Installation | $70 - $150 |
| Monthly lease/monitoring | $60 - $80/month |
| Calibration (every 60 days) | Usually included in monthly fee |
| Removal fee | $50 - $100 |
| Total for 6 months (1st offense) | $430 - $630 |
| Total for 12 months (2nd offense) | $790 - $1,110 |
Financial hardship programs may be available. Low-income drivers may qualify for reduced-cost IID programs through approved providers.
How to Get an IID Installed
- Choose a state-approved IID provider — California approves specific manufacturers (Intoxalock, Smart Start, LifeSafer, Dräger)
- Schedule installation — Typically takes 1-2 hours at an authorized service center
- Get proof of installation — The provider gives you a certificate (DL920 form)
- Submit proof to the DMV — Along with SR-22, DUI program enrollment, and reinstatement fee
- Receive your IID-restricted license — Your driving record will show an IID restriction
Living With an IID — What to Know
- Blow before starting: Every time you start your car, you must provide a clean breath sample. If alcohol is detected (typically above 0.02%), the car won't start.
- Rolling retests: While driving, the device will randomly ask for a retest (every 15-45 minutes). You have about 5 minutes to provide a sample. If you fail or don't blow, the horn may honk and lights flash until you pull over.
- Calibration appointments: Every 60 days, you must bring your vehicle to the service center for device calibration and data download.
- Food & mouthwash caution: Certain foods, mouthwash, and medicines can trigger a false positive. Wait 15 minutes after eating or using mouthwash before blowing.
- Cold weather: The device may take longer to warm up in cold temperatures. Allow extra time before starting.
- Only YOUR vehicle: The IID is installed on the vehicle(s) registered to you. You are not allowed to drive any vehicle that doesn't have an IID installed.
IID Violations
Certain events can extend your IID requirement or trigger additional penalties:
- Failed breath test: BAC above threshold triggers a lockout. Multiple failures extend IID period.
- Missed calibration: Failing to show up for a scheduled calibration may result in a lockout.
- Tampering or circumventing: Attempting to bypass the device is a separate criminal offense.
- Having someone else blow for you: This is illegal and extends your IID requirement.
- Driving a non-IID vehicle: If caught, additional criminal charges and IID extension.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive any car with an IID requirement?
No. You can only drive vehicles that have an IID installed. If you need to drive a work vehicle, your employer's vehicle must also have an IID (with a notarized employer authorization form).
What if I don't own a car?
If you don't own a vehicle, you may be able to obtain a non-owner IID exemption. You'll still need SR-22 insurance (non-owner policy). However, if you drive ANY vehicle during the IID period, it must have an IID installed.
Does the IID affect my car warranty?
Most IID installations are non-invasive and should not affect your vehicle warranty. The device connects to the starter system and can be removed without damage.
What happens when my IID period is over?
Schedule a removal appointment at your IID provider. They'll remove the device, provide a removal certificate, and submit final compliance data to the DMV. Your license restriction is then lifted.
