About California DUI Programs
California law requires anyone convicted of a DUI to complete a state-licensed drinking driver program (DDP) through the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). This directory contains all 199 DHCS-licensed providers across 50 California counties.
Program Types
- First Offender Program (FOP): For first-time DUI convictions. Includes 3-month (AB541, BAC under 0.15%), 6-month (AB1353, BAC 0.15-0.20%), and 9-month (AB1353, BAC 0.20%+) tracks. Covers alcohol/drug education, group counseling, and individual sessions.
- 18-Month Program (SB38): Required for second DUI offenses. Minimum 52 hours of group sessions plus individual counseling and community reentry planning.
- 30-Month Program (SB1176): For third or subsequent DUI convictions. The most intensive program with extended monitoring and ongoing counseling requirements.
What to Expect
DUI programs include education about the effects of alcohol and drug use, group counseling sessions, individual interviews, and community reentry planning. You must enroll promptly β courts and the DMV both require proof of enrollment. Most programs offer day, evening, and weekend sessions for flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do DUI classes cost?
Costs vary by program length: First Offender programs typically cost $500-$900, 18-month programs $1,800-$2,500, and 30-month programs $2,500-$3,500. Some programs offer payment plans.
Can I attend DUI classes online?
California DHCS began allowing some virtual participation during COVID. Check with your specific provider about current virtual/hybrid options.
What happens if I miss a class?
Missing classes can delay your completion and may be reported to the court or DMV. Most programs allow make-up sessions β contact your provider immediately if you need to reschedule.
Do I need to enroll before my court date?
Yes β enrolling early shows the court good faith. The DMV also requires proof of enrollment for license reinstatement. Don't wait.
